Looking for the hottest snack this summer to help cool you down? Then you need to make watermelon fries part of your menu immediately. We saw it on Tik-Tok and are here to tell you, this is your summer fling! There is nothing like biting into a fresh, sweet, juicy watermelon. And now you can get all that refreshing fruit in bite-sized pieces. Pair it with a zesty coconut dip and you have absolute perfection. Here’s how we did it.
This snack is so easy, you can’t really call it a recipe. All you need is a delicious watermelon, some coconut yogurt, honey, fresh lime, and Tajin seasoning. Oh, and a crinkle slicer. This handy little tool makes your slices of watermelon look just like fries–easy to hold and easy to dip. Kids will go bonkers over this hack alone. We can’t wait for you to try it out!
First, you need to pick a ripe watermelon. We like to use all the tricks to make sure we get one that is sweet and juicy! So look for a rind that is matte, not shiny. Look for green stripes that go from one end to the other. Look for patches of little pinprick holes on the rind–these are called bee stings. Look for a yellow “field spot” where the watermelon rested on the ground. And look for a watermelon that feels heavy and sounds kind of hollow when you knock against the rind. All of these tips combine to help you select a watermelon that is ripe and ready to be enjoyed!
When you are ready, rinse and dry the outside of your watermelon. Then, using a sharp chef’s knife, carefully cut your watermelon in half crosswise so you have two round pieces. Save one half to eat later. Then cut off the stem end off of the other half. Place your watermelon cut side down on a cutting board and use the chef’s knife at an angle to remove the rind and white flesh. Once the rind is off, cut the watermelon into circles about ½” thick. Now you are ready for the cheese cutter. Use it to cut the watermelon circles into fry-sized strips (pst, this is where you can get your kids involved).
Once your watermelon fries are cut and ready you can whip up the dip. It’s a simple combination of coconut yogurt, about a Tbsp of honey, juice and zest from one lime, and a dash of Tajin seasoning (it’s the best spicy, but not too spicy seasoning!). Then just arrange the dip and “fries” on a serving platter and sprinkle the fruit with more Tajin. Serve and enjoy! Not sure your family is up for the spicy Tajin? That’s fine. Just swap it out and sprinkle in a little Kosher salt instead.
This snack has been life-changing! Once you try this quick trick, you might not ever go back to eating watermelon the regular way. Cutting the watermelon fries makes it way easier to eat and involves a little less cleanup. And it is so refreshing and delicious! If you try it, let us know what you think.
