If we could give you a little peek into our DMs, the NUMBER ONE concern that’s coming up for people is getting their starter to GROW. Seeing lots of bubbles and activity, but not seeing a rise in volume indicates the starter is not yet strong enough to leaven bread.

So let’s figure this out together friends! We posted some troubleshooting tips on Saturday… but here’s a smaller, straight-to-the-point guide that might be easier to digest (pun intended. Y’know, because sourdough 😉). Let us know what you’re trying this week to strengthen that starter!

Let’s take a pause today and talk troubleshooting your starter. If you’ve been along for the ride and started your own starter, but it seems to be having trouble becoming active, here are a few FAQ-based things to watch for and routine changes that may help!

These slides are text heavy and may seem lengthy, but if you’re someone who’s looking for some guidance and help with your starter, our hope is that we can answer your questions here! Have you run into any of these issues?

For many years, I thought naming a starter was wei

For many years, I thought naming a starter was weird. (Keep in mind I hadn’t had great success with starters so I didn’t really understand it) but friends would return to classes and tell me about sally, doughlene, or bread Pitt.

It was fun to hear how connected they felt to their starter and I loved hearing their passion for it. But didn’t understand why it needed a name. Fast forward to almost two weeks into our sourdough adventure and I now get it. Huey, Dewey, and Louie are friends that I meet you can morning. Chat about food and see how they’re growing. They’re really friends.

Today at church, a friend asked if I had ever tried sourdough. Without even knowing our adventures on here- I was so excited to actually say yes. We talked about starter, the excitement of making things from scratch and how fulfilling sourdough can be. I left that conversation realizing I had a better connection than I had realized I had- I really got so excited to chat about it and I was shocked at how much I could share with her- because of this journey we’re all.

So if this method of growing our starter feels a little redundant or questioning if it’s worth it- take a second to really see what you’re doing. You should be proud of your starter. You should be proud of you.

We’ve made it to day eleven (is that what day it is?) in our sourdough journey and whether you’re right here with us or you’re coming back later, we’ve got some great some tips for you. Now that we’ve put so much effort into starting a starter, how do we know when it’s time to use it?

There are a couple of ways to test for when your starter is ready to bake bread with. Keep in mind that every starter is different! Maybe you’re ready to dive into making a loaf of bread and maybe your starter still needs some more attention and coercion. I’m either case, we’re glad you’re here and we’re excited to start testing [and using!] this new baby of ours!
